Severe Weather Update 6: March 2026 Kona Low Storm

Details

Flooding and ponding on roadways is impacting Oahu as a result of the passing Kona Low Storm. Strong winds are expected in addition to the heavy rain. Prepare for flooding and power outages over the next few days.

Use caution outdoors and limit travel if at all possible when severe weather conditions are present.

A Flood Watch is in effect until Saturday afternoon. Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of streams and drainages. Roads in several areas may be closed, along
with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

A High Wind Warning is in effect through Sunday morning. Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph are expected. Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines and
damage roofs. Power outages are possible.

The City and County of Honolulu urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay out of effected areas. Numerous road closures are in effect as a result of storm impacts. Follow all instructions from emergency officials and first responders on scene. If a traffic light is out, treat the intersection as an all-way stop.

TheBus, Handi-Van and Skyline will run on a normal weekday schedule. Handi-Van Reservations & Cancellations will operate normal business hours. Handi-Van Customer Service, Transit Pass Office, Lost & Found, and Customer Service Offices will be closed.

Residents are reminded of the following closures of City facilities and events:

• City parks facilities and gardens are closed
• Camping permits are suspended
• Royal Hawaiian Band performances are cancelled
• Municipal golf courses are closed
• The Honolulu Zoo is closed
• Neal S. Blaisdell Center and the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell are closed

Additional closures and cancellations are likely if storm impacts worsen. Monitor HNL Alert and official social media for updates.

City and emergency management officials are actively monitoring weather conditions, stream gauges, and water levels in dams and levees. T are no evacuations ordered at this time. The City will provide updates if needed. Staying informed and prepared helps protect both your household and the wider community.

Residents living in dam evacuation zones and other flood-prone areas are encouraged to remain vigilant as heavy rain and possible flooding are forecast over the next several days. Find out if you are in a dam or levee evacuation zone at: www.honolulu.gov/damevac

While t is no immediate emergency, households in these areas should take time now to review emergency plans, check supplies such as food, water, and medications, and ensure phones and essential devices are charged.

Residents are reminded to use caution and take action to stay safe during the storm.

Turn around, don’t drown! Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flowing or rising water. Floodwaters can rise rapidly. Just 1 foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. If your vehicle is caught in rapidly moving water, stay inside. If water begins to rise inside the vehicle, get on the roof.

Use extreme caution outdoors and check the weather forecast. Do not cross flooded streams. Streambeds that appear dry can quickly flood due to rain upstream, even if it is not raining w you are.

Check on others: Individuals and families are encouraged to prepare early, especially households with individuals who may need additional support during severe weather, including older vulnerable adults, people with disabilities, individuals with medical conditions, and those who rely on medical equipment or mobility assistance. Planning ahead can help ensure everyone in the household remains safe and supported as conditions worsen.
